Yesterday marked five years since the Hunting with Dogs Act came into force.
If elected as the next MP for Bristol North West I would vote against any repeal of the act.
The Conservative leader David Cameron has made clear that he would hold a free vote on the issue if he became Prime Minister - in the clear expectation that the vast majority of his party would vote to overturn the ban.
I am strongly opposed to this for three reasons.
Firstly fox hunting is cruel and unnecessary.
Secondly there is overwhelming public support for the current ban.
Thirdly because the original ban took up a huge amount of Parliamentary time.
At a time of recession, with a record fiscal deficit, great inequality in health and education provision, a political system to clean up, a war in Afghanistan and the pressing need to reduce our carbon emissions, bringing back fox hunting should not be a priority for any Government.
