The Government has admitted it is spending up to £230 000 a day on ID cards. These figures were obtained by the Liberal Democrats.
We also know that Bristol has fewer police officers per head of the population than many other major cities and our chief constable, Colin Port, has highlighted how the peculiarities of the current funding formula means that Avon and Somerset police receives £12 million less per year in funding that it should do.
Put side by side these figures make very sobering reading.
ID cards will not stop terrorism, halt illegal immigration or prevent organised benefit fraud. They are a huge cost to the taxpayer at precisely the same time as our local police force is saying it is losing out on vital investment.
It is time that the ID card fiasco was stopped and we use the money to invest in frontline policing.
