The Liberal Democrats are right to reject proposals for a Cardiff to Weston-super-Mare barrage and instead focus on other tidal flow technologies and a smaller 'Shoots Barrage'.
It is critical that we harness the renewable energy potential of the Severn, which could provide up to 5% of the UK's electricity needs. However there are better and more innovative ways to do this than the Government's current preferred option.
The Lib Dem plan would also ensure that plans for a deep water container terminal at Avonmouth Port are unaffected.
This is vital, not only for the jobs this will create in north Bristol, (where Avonmouth is already the city's leading hub for environmental technology businesses), but for the benefits it could bring the UK economy as a whole.
Avonmouth is far better located that Felixstowe and other major ports, and with the potential for greater rail links, it could see a transformation in the way freight is transported into and around the country.
