Bernard J Steward is right that Bristol needs more police officers. (EP letters, 9th December)
He may be interested to know that, across the whole of Avon and Somerset, police numbers fell by 91 last year, according to the Government's own figures.
Compared to other cities of similar size Bristol has fewer police officers per 100 000 of the population. We fall well behind the likes of Sheffield, Leeds and Newcastle.
The result is that our excellent police officers are often over-stretched and we must step up the campaign to ensure that Bristol gets the level of police officers we need.
The view of local residents is clear too. An overwhelming majority see this as a more important priority for new spending than the Government's plans for compulsory ID cards.
Yours sincerely,
