Dear Sir,
It is ironic that the Conservatives now appear to be opposing the latest round of Government cuts to the Post Office network when over 3500 local post offices were closed the last time they were in power.
Unless you have an alternative to the status quo that opposition is mere populism masquerading as community campaigning.
The Liberal Democrats have consistently opposed the closure of our local post offices but more to the point have some coherent proposals for supporting the network. These include retaining benefit payments through Post Office card accounts, freeing the Post Office from Royal Mail restrictions to let it develop new business, and giving all employees a stake in the company: rather like the successful model of the John Lewis Partnership. The end result would be greater commercial freedom, but a Post Office network that remains in the public sector.
Bristol Conservatives have jumped on this bandwagon but have yet to demonstrate what their alternative plan for the Post Office would be.
Yours sincerely,
