Dear Sir,
The Chair of the Police Federation, Paul Green, has highlighted that Avon and Somerset Police are short of 1000 officers and suggests that money earmarked for Police Community Support Officers, (PCSOs), be directed to employ more constables.
My fear is that funding for front-line officers will get worse as the Government continues with its plan to introduce compulsory ID cards.
Recent events in London and Glasgow have highlighted once again the important role front-line officers play in preventing major incidents and I refuse to believe that ID cards, which will cost as much as £6 billion to introduce, are the answer to tackling the serious terrorist threat that we face. Not only are they an infringement on the liberty of millions of law-abiding citizens, but the scheme will draw increasingly heavily on the Home Office budget at a time when more police officers are needed.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Harrod
